What Is Hip Replacement Surgery?

Hip replacement, also known as hip arthroplasty, replaces a diseased hip joint with an artificial one to reduce pain and let you resume normal activities. During the procedure, your surgeon:

1Makes an incision in the thigh
2Moves the muscles aside to access the hip joint
3Removes the damaged bone and cartilage
4Positions the artificial joint
5May secure the joint with bone cement
Materials & Candidates

Artificial joints can be made of metal, plastic, ceramic, or a combination, chosen by your surgeon for your individual case. Hip replacement may be recommended for conditions such as arthritis or osteonecrosis when conservative treatment no longer provides relief.

Risks & Recovery

While hip replacement is a routine procedure, it carries some risk, including infection, blood clots, loosening or dislocation of the prosthesis, fracture around the prosthesis, and joint stiffness. Recovery varies from a few weeks to several months, and full recovery can take up to a year. Most patients return to normal activities.
