Hip replacement surgery, also known as hip arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure that replaces a diseased hip joint with an artificial one. The goal is to reduce pain and allow the patient to resume normal activities. During the procedure, an orthopedic surgeon: Makes an incision in the thigh Moves the muscles aside to access the hip joint Removes the damaged bone and cartilage Positions the artificial joint May use bone cement to secure the artificial joint to the bone The artificial parts can be made of metal, plastic, ceramic, or a combination of these materials. The type of material used depends on the patient and is decided by the surgeon. Hip replacement surgery may be needed for conditions such as arthritis or osteonecrosis.
While it's a routine procedure, it does carry some risk. Complications can include: Infections, Blood clots, Loosening or dislocation of the prosthesis, Broken bones around the prosthesis, and Joint stiffness. Recovery time can vary from a few weeks to several months, and full recovery can take up to a year. Most patients can resume normal activities within a month or two.
